Best Places to Visit on an Alaska Cruise
Juneau
Juneau offers the perfect mix of scenic beauty, rich history and exciting shore excursions. Top Excursions include the Mendenhall Glacier and Heli Dog Sledding. The view of Juneau from the top of the Scenic Tramway is exceptional
Juneau in Summer time
Ketchikan
Ketchikan is such a fun stop with opportunities to explore indigenous culture at the Totem pole park, lumber jack shows and some of our favourite zip line trips. Or just wander through creek street for a feel of Ketchikan's colourful pioneer past
Colourful Ketchikan
Glacier Bay National Park
Not offered by all cruise-lines as access to this beautiful National park is limited. A great opportunity to experience Glaciers calving and wonder at their size and scale. The cruise lines who visit here usually bring an Alaskan Ranger onboard to talk to guests during this special day
Glacier Bay
Icy Strait Point
This relatively new destination has been developed around adventure activities and offers a real feel of the Alaska great outdoors
Brown Bear
Skagway
A great opportunity to experience a pioneering frontier town, Skagway is also the starting point for the White Pass & Yukon Railway which is one of the most popular shore excursions
Skagway Main Street
Sitka
With it's onion domed cathedral, Sitka still oozes it's Russian past and is a really interesting destination for Kiwis to visit
Sitka Harbour
When is the Best Time to Travel to Alaska
Late April through May
Often considered one of the best times for Kiwis to travel to Alaska. It is the start of the season, so less crowds, often lower cruise prices and a good chance to see bears & bald eagles
June
Usually excellent weather, lush scenery and nearly 20 hours of daylight in some northern areas. A larger choice of cruiselines and itineraries on offer and one of the peak times for humpback whale spotting
July
Usually the warmest month in Alaska, with the most cruise options and on-shore activities available. It is peak season, so often the busiest and most expensive time
August
Still good for wildlife and warmer temperatures, but pack a rain coat as more chance of showers
September & Early October
Temperatures are cooling down and crowds are fewer as the season winds down, which also often means good cruise deals as well. Autumn colours in most places and the later you go the higher chance of seeing the Northern lights in the northern destinations
We asked our cruise specialist Shelley Williams if she has a favourite time to visit Alaska
If you want to combine great whale watching with excellent fishing, mid June to early July is one of the best times to go. During this time you will have
- Excellent humpback whale activity and if you are lucky a chance to see them bubble net feeding
- Great King Salmon and halibut fishing, look out for shore excursions offering this option
- Long daylight hours for sightseeing & excursions, so more holiday time for your dollar!
- Generally pleasant weather, it’s Alaska though so always pack a jacket
